Actress and writer Lena Dunham was having a fantastic time in Wales in the summer of 2019.
But she wasn’t just here having a nice holiday and painting naked in a garden, the Girls creator and star was making new HBO/BBC drama, Industry.
The show, an eight-part series, starts on Tuesday, November 10 and is a financial drama following a group of graduates who compete for positions at a prestigious investment bank in London. There’s more on that, including cast and where it was filmed, below.
Dunham directs the first episode and is executive producer of the series, which also airs in the US on HBO, and back in June 2019 she revealed more about the show and why she was in Wales
The actress wrote on Instagram: “AHHHH! I’m so excited to announce I’m directing & executive producing a new series with HBO called INDUSTRY.
“It’s all about the cutthroat world of international finance. Think Wolf of Wall Street meets Melrose Place!
“I’ve moved across the pond for the summer to shoot this – specifically Wales UK – which is a dreamy place with fairytale gardens, super sweet humans, and dragon mythology.
“So taking reccs on secret spots, cuisine, you name it! Stay tuned for more!”
Lena spent a lot of time exploring the country and tasting Welsh cakes, which she described in the most Lena Dunham-way possible, saying: ” It’s like a pancake f***ed a scone.”
Caerphilly Castle was a spot she enjoyed but she also had a spell at hospital, praising the NHS on The Jonathan Ross Show.
“Wales as a country is the most beautiful, welcoming, joyful place,” she told the host. “I have to say, I ended up in the hospital in Wales and it was better than Disneyland.
“They bring you a ham sandwich every two hours, everybody comes in and tells you you look ‘lush’ and they say how lovely the afternoon is outside. I love Wales, I love Welsh cakes, I love walking in the hills.”
Aside from enjoying herself, Lena was also here to work, so let’s find out more about Industry.
What’s it about?
The story will follow a handful of young graduates as they chase after a limited number of permanent jobs at a top investment bank in London. They are entering the finance sector in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and competition is tougher than ever – both in and out of the office.
The official breakdown says: “The boundaries between colleague, friend, lover, and enemy soon blur as they immerse themselves in a company culture defined as much by sex, drugs, and ego as it is by deals and dividends. As members of the group rise and fall, they must decide whether life is about more than the bottom line.”
Who stars in Industry?
It’s packed full of new, young talent. The cast includes Gus (Deep State’s David Jonsson), Hari (played by Informer’s Nabhaan Rizwan), Robert (Harry Lawtey), Harper (Myha’la Herrold), Yasmin (Cobra’s Marisa Abela), Tom (Game of Thrones’ Will Tudor), Kenny (Conor MacNeill) and Daria (Skins star Freya Mavor).
Where was Industry filmed?
As Lena was staying in Wales and working alongside Bad Wolf on the series, lots of studio work is likely to have been done at Cardiff’s Wolf Studios.
But in 2019 several filming crews were spotted around Cardiff and Newport that were believed to be the Industry shoot. They included Coffee Thirst on Commercial Road, in Newport in December 2019.
Industry also used locations in London.
